The Power of Propaganda to Shape People’s Choices
Objective: Describe the background, course, and consequences of the Holocaust, including its roots in the long tradition of Christian antisemitism, 19th century ideas about race and nation, and Nazi dehumanization of the Jews; Students critically view and analyze visual images; Students make comparisons and contrasts between the uses of Nazi propaganda in the 1930s and the manipulation of images in the media today

Agenda:
- DO NOW: Open up your World War II Essential Questions and write a PRELIMINARY answer to question #5 “How was Hitler and the Nazi Party able to come to power in 1933?”
- Class discussion: What is propaganda? Analysis of modern propaganda, including, “If you buy, you will get…” activity.
- Reading 3 (“Propaganda”) from Chapter 5 “Conformity and Obedience” in the FHAO Holocaust and Human Behavior book
- Class analysis of propaganda poster, “Mutter Und Kind” using a specific technique and series of questions to analyze the image
- Students will choose one poster from the five below to analyze on their own. Students should be prepared to present their analysis.
Homework:
1. Read Chapter 15 Section 2 “Global Depression” and create a Cornell Notes Organizer on page 61 in your notebook.
2. 10-question quiz on Wednesday’s half day on the major outcomes and effects of World War I and the Weimar Republic.
